The reason for this competition is the conversion of the Berlin subway stations U-Schillerstraße and U-Weberwiese into cultural stations. On the track levels of both stations, there are large areas for advertising on the rear track surfaces. The overarching Kulturbahnhöfe exhibition concept envisages high-quality photographic image series on these large areas. The so-called back track pictures become a photo gallery.
The intuitive approach to the work was to focus on situations, viewpoints and relationships along Karl-Marx-Allee that might not immediately spring to mind when first thinking of this “boulevard”. Special visual axes were chosen to connect different building typologies along the KMA II construction section. The comparison of the two images illustrates, on the one hand, the role of nature as an essential urban link between the built volumes and, on the other hand, captures moments in which the large-scale and strict continuity of the avenue is broken in order to create a more human scale and allow individual spaces to emerge.
